Oncologists are continually in search of ways to improve the clinical outcomes of their patients. This is the impetus behind the field of cancer research and development.
Laboratory research and clinical trials are an integral part of oncological care. Only when we increase our understanding of the molecular events that underlie development and spread of cancer, are we able to devise methods to arrest or reverse the process. Upon the innovation and development of new treatments, their effectiveness and safety must be tested in the context of a clinical trial.
At ICS, we offer the choice of participation in clinical trials when it is appropriate for patients. Clinical trials are often combination therapies consisting of conventional and latest drugs. The new treatments tend to be targeted against cancer-specific molecules (Targeted Therapy) and are thus selective for cancer cells, achieving maximal anti-tumour effect with minimal side effects. All clinical trials are conducted to the highest ethical and safety international standards.
In line with the push towards personalised medicine, the field of molecular diagnostics is gradually geared towards building an individual's molecular profile to determine the optimal treatment for him/her. In the near future, treatment decisions may be guided by gene mutation or gene expression data. At ICS, we utilise the latest techniques offered by molecular diagnostics to determine the best treatments for patients.
