| Palliative Care and Home Care

The aim of treatment in the context of advanced stage cancer is mainly palliative, i.e. to enhance quality of life through effective symptom control. The common perception of cancer is associated with pain, nausea and vomiting, poor appetite, poor sleep, general decline, all occurring in the midst of emotional turmoil, which may in turn take its toll on relationships with family members and loved ones.
The triumph of medical advances is the development of effective methods in relieving pain, controlling nausea and vomiting, stimulating appetite, sedation for restful sleep, even chemotherapy drugs with more favourable side effect profiles. As such, the cancer journey may be fraught with difficulties, but there are ways to surmount these problems.
ICS aims to ease and relieve symptoms, as well as to comfort patients and their families, to face their challenges with calm and dignity. Our physicians and nurses are trained in symptom management and counselling. The ICS healthcare team works in an integrated approach to assess for symptoms during every visit and to modify medications and prescribe the latest treatments to relieve these symptoms. In addition, our healthcare professionals help patients and families to cope with their illness and symptoms with encouragement and advice.
ICS offers home care services to assist and support nursing care, palliative care, health education, nutritional and emotional counselling, in the comfort of the patient's home surroundings.
The home care team comprises doctors, nurses and volunteers, a number of whom are themselves cancer survivors who will be able to share their experiences and relate to the patients and their needs. |
